I wanted the cabinet to look retro so opted for a mainly red on black colour scheme. I reckon that is a very 80's colour scheme. A bit like the Spectrum or the A-team van.

I didnt think I would have anywhere near the practical skills required to refurb an old cabinet. Plus I remember those old cabs being rather large, or that may be because I was very small! So I opted to create a cabinet based on my memory of what a cab should look like.

I wanted the cabinet to have a harsh, boxy 80's shape, although now I have it I wish it wasnt quite so square. There are some definate kid un-friendly corners on it that are an accident waiting to happen! woops! :)

As I said before much of the design was done in Google Sketchup. If you haven't already gathered I absolutely love Sketchup. Its ease of use and power combine into one of the greatest free tools on the interwebs. One of its cool features is the ability to put 3D models into Google Earth. I have had 3 buildings from my home town included. Please have a look here.

Ive uploaded my Sketchup designs here in case anyone wants a look.

Im not a great fan of the name but I couldn't really think of anything better. Seems to fit though, I can vaugely remember a period when a lot of things seem to be called mega!

I also changed the font of the text. The finished cabinet uses a font called nasalization free. Find a copy on this page.

One thing I wanted to do was to pay homage to the companies that produced all of the wonderful games of my youth. They are now produly displayed in red on the control deck and colour round the screen bezel. During my arcade cab searches I found a nice .ai vector graphic of many video game company logos. I dunno where I got it from but thanks. Find a copy on this page.

Some more inspiration came in the form of the forums on BYOAC. Please take a look there are tons of mind blowingly beautiful designs on there.

Another idea I had was to pay homage to the awesome 80's movie WarGames. I toyed with idea of calling the cab W.O.P.R. after the computer in the movie. As you can see on the earlier pics I have used the quote 'Shall we play a game?' which Joshua says in the film. In the final cab I didn't really do much WarGames stuff apart from the Windows shutdown/startup audios which sound kinda cool. I have included them on this page.

StreetFighter is one of my favourite arcade games, especially Alpha 2 so I definately wanted some SF artwork to feature on the cab. Again on my many searches I unearthed some lovely hi-res Puzzle Fighter super deformed pics of some of the characters. Ive recently added the large Ken on the side. It has added some much need colour to the cab. I have uploaded the SF art to this page.
